¹ And Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel.² And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.³ The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said.⁴ And the LORD shall do unto them as he did to Sihon and to Og, kings of the Amorites, and unto the land of them, whom he destroyed.⁵ And the LORD shall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you.⁶ Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.⁷ And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.⁸ And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.⁹ And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and unto all the elders of Israel.¹⁰ And Moses commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the solemnity of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles,¹¹ When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.¹² Gather the people together, men and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:¹³ And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.¹⁴ And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thy days approach that thou must die: call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation, that I may give him a charge. And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation.¹⁵ And the LORD appeared in the tabernacle in a pillar of a cloud: and the pillar of the cloud stood over the door of the tabernacle.¹⁶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.¹⁷ Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?¹⁸ And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.¹⁹ Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.²⁰ For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant.²¹ And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware.²² Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.²³ And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee.²⁴ And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished,²⁵ That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying,²⁶ Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.²⁷ For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?²⁸ Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them.²⁹ For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.³⁰ And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song, until they were ended.

¹ Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.² And it was told the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.³ And Samson lay till midnight, and arose at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before Hebron.⁴ And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.⁵ And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.⁶ And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest be bound to afflict thee.⁷ And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.⁸ Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.⁹ Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withs, as a thread of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.¹⁰ And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.¹¹ And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.¹² Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And there were liers in wait abiding in the chamber. And he brake them from off his arms like a thread.¹³ And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.¹⁴ And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.¹⁵ And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.¹⁶ And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;¹⁷ That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.¹⁸ And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.¹⁹ And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.²⁰ And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.²¹ But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.²² Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.²³ Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.²⁴ And when the people saw him, they praised their god: for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which slew many of us.²⁵ And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars.²⁶ And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house standeth, that I may lean upon them.²⁷ Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport.²⁸ And Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.²⁹ And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left.³⁰ And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.³¹ Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.

¹ Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;² It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.³ And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.⁴ And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.⁵ And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?⁶ And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.⁷ And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.⁸ And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.⁹ He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.¹⁰ So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.¹¹ Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:¹² And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.¹³ And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.¹⁴ And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?¹⁵ And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.¹⁶ And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD's anointed.¹⁷ And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:¹⁸ (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)¹⁹ The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!²⁰ Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.²¹ Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.²² From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.²³ Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.²⁴ Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.²⁵ How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.²⁶ I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.²⁷ How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!

¹ And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.² And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee.³ And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.⁴ And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.⁵ The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.⁶ And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.⁷ And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.⁸ And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:⁹ For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.¹⁰ So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.¹¹ Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.¹² And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.¹³ And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,¹⁴ And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.¹⁵ Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.¹⁶ And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:¹⁷ For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.¹⁸ He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.¹⁹ So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.²⁰ And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back:²¹ And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,²² But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.²³ And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.²⁴ And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.²⁵ And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.²⁶ And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.²⁷ And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him.²⁸ And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.²⁹ And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.³⁰ And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!³¹ And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:³² For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.³³ After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.³⁴ And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

And Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil in the sight of the LORD; and he slew him.⁴ And Tamar his daughter in law bore him Pharez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five.⁵ The sons of Pharez; Hezron, and Hamul.⁶ And the sons of Zerah; Zimri, and Ethan, and Heman, and Calcol, and Dara: five of them in all.⁷ And the sons of Carmi; Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the thing accursed.⁸ And the sons of Ethan; Azariah.⁹ The sons also of Hezron, that were born unto him; Jerahmeel, and Ram, and Chelubai.¹⁰ And Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon, prince of the children of Judah;¹¹ And Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz,¹² And Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse,¹³ And Jesse begat his firstborn Eliab, and Abinadab the second, and Shimma the third,¹⁴ Nethaneel the fourth, Raddai the fifth,¹⁵ Ozem the sixth, David the seventh:¹⁶ Whose sisters were Zeruiah, and Abigail. And the sons of Zeruiah; Abishai, and Joab, and Asahel, three.¹⁷ And Abigail bare Amasa: and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmeelite.¹⁸ And Caleb the son of Hezron begat children of Azubah his wife, and of Jerioth: her sons are these; Jesher, and Shobab, and Ardon.¹⁹ And when Azubah was dead, Caleb took unto him Ephrath, which bare him Hur.²⁰ And Hur begat Uri, and Uri begat Bezaleel.²¹ And afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was threescore years old; and she bare him Segub.²² And Segub begat Jair, who had three and twenty cities in the land of Gilead.²³ And he took Geshur, and Aram, with the towns of Jair, from them, with Kenath, and the towns thereof, even threescore cities. All these belonged to the sons of Machir the father of Gilead.²⁴ And after that Hezron was dead in Calebephratah, then Abiah Hezron's wife bare him Ashur the father of Tekoa.²⁵ And the sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron were, Ram the firstborn, and Bunah, and Oren, and Ozem, and Ahijah.²⁶ Jerahmeel had also another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam.²⁷ And the sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel were, Maaz, and Jamin, and Eker.²⁸ And the sons of Onam were, Shammai, and Jada. And the sons of Shammai; Nadab and Abishur.²⁹ And the name of the wife of Abishur was Abihail, and she bare him Ahban, and Molid.³⁰ And the sons of Nadab; Seled, and Appaim: but Seled died without children.³¹ And the sons of Appaim; Ishi. And the sons of Ishi; Sheshan. And the children of Sheshan; Ahlai.³² And the sons of Jada the brother of Shammai; Jether, and Jonathan: and Jether died without children.³³ And the sons of Jonathan; Peleth, and Zaza. These were the sons of Jerahmeel.³⁴ Now Sheshan had no sons, but daughters. And Sheshan had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Jarha.³⁵ And Sheshan gave his daughter to Jarha his servant to wife; and she bare him Attai.³⁶ And Attai begat Nathan, and Nathan begat Zabad,³⁷ And Zabad begat Ephlal, and Ephlal begat Obed,³⁸ And Obed begat Jehu, and Jehu begat Azariah,³⁹ And Azariah begat Helez, and Helez begat Eleasah,⁴⁰ And Eleasah begat Sisamai, and Sisamai begat Shallum,⁴¹ And Shallum begat Jekamiah, and Jekamiah begat Elishama.⁴² Now the sons of Caleb the brother of Jerahmeel were, Mesha his firstborn, which was the father of Ziph; and the sons of Mareshah the father of Hebron.⁴³ And the sons of Hebron; Korah, and Tappuah, and Rekem, and Shema.⁴⁴ And Shema begat Raham, the father of Jorkoam: and Rekem begat Shammai.⁴⁵ And the son of Shammai was Maon: and Maon was the father of Bethzur.⁴⁶ And Ephah, Caleb's concubine, bare Haran, and Moza, and Gazez: and Haran begat Gazez.⁴⁷ And the sons of Jahdai; Regem, and Jotham, and Gesham, and Pelet, and Ephah, and Shaaph.⁴⁸ Maachah, Caleb's concubine, bare Sheber, and Tirhanah.⁴⁹ She bare also Shaaph the father of Madmannah, Sheva the father of Machbenah, and the father of Gibea: and the daughter of Caleb was Achsa.⁵⁰ These were the sons of Caleb the son of Hur, the firstborn of Ephratah; Shobal the father of Kirjathjearim.⁵¹ Salma the father of Bethlehem, Hareph the father of Bethgader.⁵² And Shobal the father of Kirjathjearim had sons; Haroeh, and half of the Manahethites.⁵³ And the families of Kirjathjearim; the Ithrites, and the Puhites, and the Shumathites, and the Mishraites; of them came the Zareathites, and the Eshtaulites,⁵⁴ The sons of Salma; Bethlehem, and the Netophathites, Ataroth, the house of Joab, and half of the Manahethites, the Zorites.⁵⁵ And the families of the scribes which dwelt at Jabez; the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and Suchathites. These are the Kenites that came of Hemath, the father of the house of Rechab.

¹ So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.² And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:³ For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:⁴ And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.⁵ Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.⁶ And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.⁷ Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.⁸ And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.⁹ And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.¹⁰ Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.¹¹ And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let no man prevail against thee.¹² So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.¹³ And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil.¹⁴ And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the LORD came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.¹⁵ They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.

¹ And the Spirit of God came upon Azariah the son of Oded:² And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.³ Now for a long season Israel hath been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law.⁴ But when they in their trouble did turn unto the LORD God of Israel, and sought him, he was found of them.⁵ And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries.⁶ And nation was destroyed of nation, and city of city: for God did vex them with all adversity.⁷ Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.⁸ And when Asa heard these words, and the prophecy of Oded the prophet, he took courage, and put away the abominable idols out of all the land of Judah and Benjamin, and out of the cities which he had taken from mount Ephraim, and renewed the altar of the LORD, that was before the porch of the LORD.⁹ And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and the strangers with them out of Ephraim and Manasseh, and out of Simeon: for they fell to him out of Israel in abundance, when they saw that the LORD his God was with him.¹⁰ So they gathered themselves together at Jerusalem in the third month, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa.¹¹ And they offered unto the LORD the same time, of the spoil which they had brought, seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep.¹² And they entered into a covenant to seek the LORD God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul;¹³ That whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman.¹⁴ And they sware unto the LORD with a loud voice, and with shouting, and with trumpets, and with cornets.¹⁵ And all Judah rejoiced at the oath: for they had sworn with all their heart, and sought him with their whole desire; and he was found of them: and the LORD gave them rest round about.¹⁶ And also concerning Maachah the mother of Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove: and Asa cut down her idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the brook Kidron.¹⁷ But the high places were not taken away out of Israel: nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect all his days.¹⁸ And he brought into the house of God the things that his father had dedicated, and that he himself had dedicated, silver, and gold, and vessels.¹⁹ And there was no more war unto the five and thirtieth year of the reign of Asa.

¹ Now those that sealed were, Nehemiah, the Tirshatha, the son of Hachaliah, and Zidkijah,² Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah,³ Pashur, Amariah, Malchijah,⁴ Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch,⁵ Harim, Meremoth, Obadiah,⁶ Daniel, Ginnethon, Baruch,⁷ Meshullam, Abijah, Mijamin,⁸ Maaziah, Bilgai, Shemaiah: these were the priests.⁹ And the Levites: both Jeshua the son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, Kadmiel;¹⁰ And their brethren, Shebaniah, Hodijah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan,¹¹ Micha, Rehob, Hashabiah,¹² Zaccur, Sherebiah, Shebaniah,¹³ Hodijah, Bani, Beninu.¹⁴ The chief of the people; Parosh, Pahathmoab, Elam, Zatthu, Bani,¹⁵ Bunni, Azgad, Bebai,¹⁶ Adonijah, Bigvai, Adin,¹⁷ Ater, Hizkijah, Azzur,¹⁸ Hodijah, Hashum, Bezai,¹⁹ Hariph, Anathoth, Nebai,²⁰ Magpiash, Meshullam, Hezir,²¹ Meshezabeel, Zadok, Jaddua,²² Pelatiah, Hanan, Anaiah,²³ Hoshea, Hananiah, Hashub,²⁴ Hallohesh, Pileha, Shobek,²⁵ Rehum, Hashabnah, Maaseiah,²⁶ And Ahijah, Hanan, Anan,²⁷ Malluch, Harim, Baanah.²⁸ And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;²⁹ They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God's law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;³⁰ And that we would not give our daughters unto the people of the land, not take their daughters for our sons:³¹ And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.³² Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;³³ For the shewbread, and for the continual meat offering, and for the continual burnt offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the sin offerings to make an atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God.³⁴ And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law:³⁵ And to bring the firstfruits of our ground, and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, unto the house of the LORD:³⁶ Also the firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our God:³⁷ And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage.³⁸ And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.³⁹ For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the porters, and the singers: and we will not forsake the house of our God.

¹ Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.² Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.³ My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.⁴ The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.⁵ If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.⁶ Behold, I am according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay.⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.⁸ Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,⁹ I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.¹⁰ Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,¹¹ He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.¹² Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.¹³ Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.¹⁴ For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.¹⁵ In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;¹⁶ Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,¹⁷ That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.¹⁸ He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.¹⁹ He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:²⁰ So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat.²¹ His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.²² Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.²³ If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:²⁴ Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.²⁵ His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth:²⁶ He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.²⁷ He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;²⁸ He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.²⁹ Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man,³⁰ To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.³¹ Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak.³² If thou hast anything to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee.³³ If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom.

¹ And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.² And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.³ And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.⁴ And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.⁵ And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.⁶ And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.⁷ Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.⁸ So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.⁹ Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.¹⁰ These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:¹¹ And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.¹² And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah:¹³ And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.¹⁴ And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:¹⁵ And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.¹⁶ And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:¹⁷ And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.¹⁸ And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu:¹⁹ And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.²⁰ And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug:²¹ And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.²² And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor:²³ And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.²⁴ And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah:²⁵ And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.²⁶ And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.²⁷ Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.²⁸ And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.²⁹ And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.³⁰ But Sarai was barren; she had no child.³¹ And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.³² And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.

¹ Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:² And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:³ And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.⁴ So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.⁵ And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.⁶ And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.⁷ And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.⁸ And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.⁹ And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.¹⁰ And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.¹¹ And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:¹² Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.¹³ Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.¹⁴ And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.¹⁵ The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.¹⁶ And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.¹⁷ And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife.¹⁸ And Pharaoh called Abram and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?¹⁹ Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.²⁰ And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.

¹ And this is the thing that thou shalt do unto them to hallow them, to minister unto me in the priest's office: Take one young bullock, and two rams without blemish,² And unleavened bread, and cakes unleavened tempered with oil, and wafers unleavened anointed with oil: of wheaten flour shalt thou make them.³ And thou shalt put them into one basket, and bring them in the basket, with the bullock and the two rams.⁴ And Aaron and his sons thou shalt bring unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shalt wash them with water.⁵ And thou shalt take the garments, and put upon Aaron the coat, and the robe of the ephod, and the ephod, and the breastplate, and gird him with the curious girdle of the ephod:⁶ And thou shalt put the mitre upon his head, and put the holy crown upon the mitre.⁷ Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him.⁸ And thou shalt bring his sons, and put coats upon them.⁹ And thou shalt gird them with girdles, Aaron and his sons, and put the bonnets on them: and the priest's office shall be theirs for a perpetual statute: and thou shalt consecrate Aaron and his sons.¹⁰ And thou shalt cause a bullock to be brought before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the bullock.¹¹ And thou shalt kill the bullock before the LORD, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.¹² And thou shalt take of the blood of the bullock, and put it upon the horns of the altar with thy finger, and pour all the blood beside the bottom of the altar.¹³ And thou shalt take all the fat that covereth the inwards, and the caul that is above the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and burn them upon the altar.¹⁴ But the flesh of the bullock, and his skin, and his dung, shalt thou burn with fire without the camp: it is a sin offering.¹⁵ Thou shalt also take one ram; and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the ram.¹⁶ And thou shalt slay the ram, and thou shalt take his blood, and sprinkle it round about upon the altar.¹⁷ And thou shalt cut the ram in pieces, and wash the inwards of him, and his legs, and put them unto his pieces, and unto his head.¹⁸ And thou shalt burn the whole ram upon the altar: it is a burnt offering unto the LORD: it is a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the LORD.¹⁹ And thou shalt take the other ram; and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the ram.²⁰ Then shalt thou kill the ram, and take of his blood, and put it upon the tip of the right ear of Aaron, and upon the tip of the right ear of his sons, and upon the thumb of their right hand, and upon the great toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about.²¹ And thou shalt take of the blood that is upon the altar, and of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon the garments of his sons with him: and he shall be hallowed, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.²² Also thou shalt take of the ram the fat and the rump, and the fat that covereth the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and the right shoulder; for it is a ram of consecration:²³ And one loaf of bread, and one cake of oiled bread, and one wafer out of the basket of the unleavened bread that is before the LORD:²⁴ And thou shalt put all in the hands of Aaron, and in the hands of his sons; and shalt wave them for a wave offering before the LORD.²⁵ And thou shalt receive them of their hands, and burn them upon the altar for a burnt offering, for a sweet savour before the LORD: it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD.²⁶ And thou shalt take the breast of the ram of Aaron's consecration, and wave it for a wave offering before the LORD: and it shall be thy part.²⁷ And thou shalt sanctify the breast of the wave offering, and the shoulder of the heave offering, which is waved, and which is heaved up, of the ram of the consecration, even of that which is for Aaron, and of that which is for his sons:²⁸ And it shall be Aaron's and his sons' by a statute for ever from the children of Israel: for it is an heave offering: and it shall be an heave offering from the children of Israel of the sacrifice of their peace offerings, even their heave offering unto the LORD.²⁹ And the holy garments of Aaron shall be his sons' after him, to be anointed therein, and to be consecrated in them.³⁰ And that son that is priest in his stead shall put them on seven days, when he cometh into the tabernacle of the congregation to minister in the holy place.³¹ And thou shalt take the ram of the consecration, and seethe his flesh in the holy place.³² And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram, and the bread that is in the basket by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.³³ And they shall eat those things wherewith the atonement was made, to consecrate and to sanctify them: but a stranger shall not eat thereof, because they are holy.³⁴ And if ought of the flesh of the consecrations, or of the bread, remain unto the morning, then thou shalt burn the remainder with fire: it shall not be eaten, because it is holy.³⁵ And thus shalt thou do unto Aaron, and to his sons, according to all things which I have commanded thee: seven days shalt thou consecrate them.³⁶ And thou shalt offer every day a bullock for a sin offering for atonement: and thou shalt cleanse the altar, when thou hast made an atonement for it, and thou shalt anoint it, to sanctify it.³⁷ Seven days thou shalt make an atonement for the altar, and sanctify it; and it shall be an altar most holy: whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy.³⁸ Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually.³⁹ The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even:⁴⁰ And with the one lamb a tenth deal of flour mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil; and the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering.⁴¹ And the other lamb thou shalt offer at even, and shalt do thereto according to the meat offering of the morning, and according to the drink offering thereof, for a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the LORD.⁴² This shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD: where I will meet you, to speak there unto thee.⁴³ And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by my glory.⁴⁴ And I will sanctify the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar: I will sanctify also both Aaron and his sons, to minister to me in the priest's office.⁴⁵ And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God.⁴⁶ And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them: I am the LORD their God.
